NORTH PIKOUNDA REDD+

Protecting 200,000 hectares of a vital migration corridor between Tsavo East and West National Parks, Kasigau Wildlife Sanctuary helps keep two of East Africa’s vast natural spaces connected.

11,000 endangered elephants and countless lions, zebras, and leopards now have room to roam.

It also supports over 116,000 residents through job creation and economic development, including a sustainable clothing factory.

THE KASIGAU CORRIDOR REDD PROJECT

MAI NDOMBE

The world’s rainforests are being destroyed at an increasingly rapid rate. To put it into context, an area the size of a football pitch disappears every second - that’s over 58 million square miles of forest lost every year. Even more alarming is the fact that we’ve already cleared away 50% of what we once had.

Deforestation is the number one cause of species extinction globally, and the second leading cause of CO2 emissions. And if it continues at its current rate, the earth’s forests could vanish completely within the next 100 years. By shifting economics to ensure that trees are worth more alive than dead, we are helping communities protect their forests for the long-term benefit of us all. And with over 200 millions tons of carbon stored within our conservation area, protecting it has never been more critical. The project’s impact is vast – here’s how your funding is helping…

Protecting the rights of Amazonian people The project is working to provide legal land-use permits that will result in official land titles for those villages that actively participate in forest protection. Through funds raised, the project can continue to improve food security through agroforestry techniques, while introducing sustainable livelihood alternatives to local communities. With over 56,000 hectares of land dedicated to these inhabitants, it is expected that each family will receive approximately 140 hectares, and each town will have its own land donated to it.

Supporting Economic Development In partnership with local NGOs, the project will provide capacity building to local families to develop and submit business plans (individually or in groups) to apply for funding to start small sustainable businesses – those that take advantage of non-timber products in the project area, such as the highly valuable Acai fruit. We are also building local capabilities in the use of agroforestry techniques, to diversify and secure food consumption, while achieving a sustainable production of cassava – used in farinha production.

Making a Stand against Climate Change Since the world’s forests are our greatest ally in the fight against climate change, we’ve made it our mission to prevent over 10 million tonnes of harmful CO2 entering the atmosphere over the 40- year lifetime of the project. We have been successfully validated and verified against the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and validated to the CCB Standards Second Edition - achieving Climate Adaptation and Biodiversity Gold Levels.

PACAJAI REDD+ PROJECT

Provide clean water, scholarships, and health centres to more than 60,000 people from rural Afro- and indigenous communities.

Protect over half a million hectares of forest and mangroves on Colombia’s lush Pacific coast, and lock up seven million tonnes of carbon emissions.

PACIFIC FOREST COMMUNITIES

Southern Cardamom protects 497,000 hectares of lowland tropical rainforest in Cambodia’s Cardamom Rainforest landscape. The Cardamoms are a critical part of the Indo-Burma global biodiversity hotspot – one of the planet’s highest conservation priorities. Their forests are threatened by illegal logging for high value timber, fuel for Cambodia’s garment factories, and deforestation by outsiders for land sales. The project addresses these threats by supporting communities and local government with protected area management, law enforcement, and by helping to develop alternative livelihoods that depend on forests and biodiversity.

SOUTHERN CARDAMOM REDD+ PROJECT

In partnership with Era Ecosystems Services, Wildlife Works implemented the REDD+ conservation strategy of using carbon revenues to prevent the logging contracts to be reinstated and establish sustainable development for the local community.

Since the project launch in 2011, logging concessions have not been regranted and with the aid of reforestation programs, the deforested areas have had a chance to regenerate, bringing back biodiversity and the ability for wildlife to thrive. Agroforestry nurseries and sustainable farming crops and techniques have been introduced to relieve deforestation pressure on the local community. The new cassava varieties and sustainable farms have 10 times higher than the yield of conventional varieties. Additionally, the project established 10 demonstration gardens and built 5 fish ponds: People in the project area have historically relied on fish production from Lake Mai Ndombe, but with the lake substantially depleted from overfishing, sustainable fish farming combined with high-yielding cassava will help improve community health and nutrition while alleviating the pressure on the forest and the lake.

Most requested by the community is education. The project has built 10 schools towards the goal of 28 schools that will impact over 8,000 students. A mobile medical clinic was established and treats thousands of patients who previously had little or no access to health care.

Before the project began, leopards, elephants, and buffalos had not been seen in the project area since the 1970s. 2020 appears to have been a turning point for wildlife in the project area: While elephants have been documented since the start of the project, 2020 marked the first known return of the buffalo and the leopard, while the elephant population in the project area has split into 3 different groups, a result of a growing population and the emergence on more dominant male animals in the group.
